Custom Carbon Fiber Steering Wheels
Installing a Road Rush custom carbon fiber steering wheel can elevate the look and feel of your vehicle. While the process is generally straightforward, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and successful installation. Follow this universal guide for a smooth installation.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Basic socket set or wrench set
- Torx or Allen keys (depending on your vehicle)
- Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
- Ratchet and extension bar
- Torque wrench
- Plastic trim removal tools (optional but recommended)
- Steering wheel puller (if necessary)
- Loctite (thread locker, optional for added security)
- Electrical tape or wire connectors (if rewiring is necessary)
- Gloves (for grip and cleanliness)
Safety Precautions:
- Disconnect the Battery: Always disconnect the vehicle’s battery before starting to avoid accidental airbag deployment and electrical shorts.
- Wait 10-15 Minutes: After disconnecting the battery, wait 10-15 minutes to ensure the airbag system is completely discharged.
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions:
1. Position the Steering Wheel Straight
- Ensure your wheels are aligned straight ahead before removing the old steering wheel. This will help with proper alignment during the installation of the new steering wheel.
2. Disconnect the Battery
- Locate your vehicle’s battery and disconnect the negative terminal using a socket wrench.
- This will deactivate the vehicle’s electrical system and prevent any airbag or electrical issues.
3. Remove the Airbag
- Locate Airbag Mounting Points: Most steering wheels have airbag modules secured with Torx bolts or screws on the back of the wheel. Use the appropriate tool to remove them.
- Carefully Remove the Airbag: Once the bolts are removed, gently pull the airbag unit forward. Be cautious not to damage the airbag wires.
- Unplug Airbag Wires: Disconnect the airbag wiring harness by gently pulling on the connectors or using a flathead screwdriver to release the clips. Set the airbag aside in a safe place, facing upward.
4. Disconnect Steering Wheel Controls and Wires
- Remove Other Connectors: Depending on your vehicle, you may need to disconnect additional wiring for steering wheel controls, horn, and other functions.
- Label Wires (Optional): If you’re not familiar with the wiring, use electrical tape to label the wires to ensure correct reinstallation.
5. Remove the Steering Wheel Bolt
- Locate the Center Bolt: Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the center bolt securing the steering wheel to the column.
- Leave the Bolt Partially Threaded: Loosen the bolt but leave it partially threaded to prevent the steering wheel from flying off when you pull it.
6. Remove the Steering Wheel
- Use a Steering Wheel Puller (If Necessary): Some steering wheels are tightly fitted and may require a steering wheel puller. Attach the puller and follow the instructions to remove the wheel.
- Wiggle and Pull Gently: If a puller is not required, gently rock the steering wheel back and forth while pulling it toward you. Once it loosens, remove the center bolt and pull the wheel off the spline.
7. Transfer Components (If Necessary)
- Remove Accessories: If your old steering wheel has buttons, paddle shifters, or wiring for controls, transfer these components to your new Road Rush carbon fiber steering wheel.
- Attach Accessories to New Wheel: Securely mount these components using the provided/existing screws or clips, ensuring everything is aligned and properly connected.
- Attach LED shifter + OBD reader: If you optioned to have the LED shifter and OBD reader installed on your Road Rush steering wheel, you will need to tap a 12v wire and ground wire to power the modules. We recommend referring to the manufacturer manuals or trusted sources online to find a suitable power tap. Once the wiring is finished, you can install the OBD reader into your vehicle's OBD port.
8. Install the New Steering Wheel
- Align the Steering Wheel: Carefully align your new Road Rush steering wheel with the splines on the steering column, making sure it’s straight.
- Insert the Center Bolt: Thread the center bolt into the steering column by hand to ensure proper alignment.
- Torque the Bolt: Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to the manufacturer’s recommended torque specification. Overtightening can damage the steering column, while under-tightening can result in a loose wheel.
9. Reconnect Steering Wheel Controls and Wires
- Reconnect any wiring harnesses for steering wheel controls, horn, or other components. Ensure all connections are secure and properly routed.
10. Reinstall the Airbag
- Reconnect the Airbag Wires: Carefully reconnect the airbag wiring harness to the new steering wheel.
- Secure the Airbag: Position the airbag module into place and tighten the bolts or screws that hold it in place. Ensure it’s snug and secure.
11. Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative terminal to your vehicle’s battery and tighten the terminal securely with a wrench.
12. Test the Steering Wheel
- Check for Proper Alignment: Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel to ensure it’s properly aligned and centered.
- Test Controls and Airbag: Make sure that all steering wheel functions, such as the horn, buttons, or paddle shifters, work as expected. Also, check the airbag warning light to ensure it’s functioning correctly.
13. Final Adjustments
- If the steering wheel feels off-center, you may need to remove it and realign it by adjusting the spline fitting.
Tips for a Successful Installation:
- Consult Your Vehicle’s Manual: Always refer to your vehicle’s manual for any specific instructions or torque settings related to the steering wheel.
- Use Threadlocker (Optional): Apply a small amount of threadlocker (Loctite) to the center bolt to ensure it remains securely fastened.
- Take Your Time: Rushing the installation can lead to improper alignment or loose connections. Take your time and ensure every step is completed correctly.
Important Warnings:
- Airbag Caution: Airbags can be dangerous if not handled properly. If you’re not comfortable working with the airbag, it’s best to have a professional handle the installation.
- Alignment Issues: Improper installation can result in steering alignment issues or loose steering, which can affect driving safety. Double-check your work or have a professional inspect it if needed.
